Patio / 天井

Its a classic Hui-Style residence’s patio - three floors, the first floor (where I stood and shot ) was used for living and receiving guests, the second floor (the main part of this photo)was the bedroom of the owner / host, and the third floor (the top floor beneath the eaves) was their daughter’s living and bedroom. Yes, living and bedroom, the young, unmarried female could not be seen by any male foreigners without permission at that time (Ming and Qing Dynasty) , so they had to live here especially when someone visited. So I consider it as a jail for girls.

How depressive life!

Shrine and Roof /
